Who You Gonna Call?

Based on Relationships: Teen Zine vol. 4, Chapter 3: creature vs. creator (not in vain)—Third Commandment

Have you ever heard anyone yell out in frustration an exclamation like, “Ugh, Karen!” or “Oh, Jim!” Probably not… unless that person really had a problem with Karen or Jim specifically. So why do people yell “Oh my God!” or “Jesus Christ!” Why do people use the name of the Lord in that way? Because there is power in that name, and no other name in the world carries that kind of weight.

God is generous enough to give us the privilege of using his name. Not only does he allow it, he encourages us to call on him. Jesus says, “You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it” (John 14:14). The disciples do all kinds of miracles of healing and casting out demons, not by their own power, but in the name of Jesus Christ. Throughout the Bible, God tells his people over and over again to call upon him.

The third commandment, “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God” (Exodus 20:7) is not only about what not to do but reminds us of what God’s name is actually given to us for. Chapter 3 of Relationships: Teen Zine vol. 4 tells us:

“God has given us a lifeline so that we can lean on him when our hearts are anxious and troubled. You can also give a ring when life is good and filled with joy!”

In the good and the bad, God says, “Call on me!”

Sometimes we forget the power that has been given to us in the Lord’s name, and we despair. Other times we forget that we do not possess this kind of power on our own, and we think we don’t need to call on God. We forget that we are the creature and he is the Creator. But take heart: “When you find yourself lost or feeling confused, call on the one who is there to forgive you and reorient your heart to trust that he has the power to make all things new.” (Teen Zine vol. 4)
